Diet Plans For High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure or hypertension, as it sometimes referred to, is a life threatening condition where the pressure of the blood is raised to a dangerous level that can result in either a stroke or a heart attack. At chronic levels it can even cause total heart failure. If the pressure of the blood exceeds 140/90mm Hg then renal failure is also possible and you are at greater risk of having heart disease. Having a suitable diet if you suffer from high blood pressure is absolutely necessary for long term survival. If you continue with a high cholesterol diet eventually you will have to suffer the consequences. Sounds scary but eating the right foods can most certainly prolong your life.

No Known Symptoms

The symptoms of high blood pressure can be hard to detect. It’s not unusual for people to have a problem for years and not be aware of the fact. That’s why it’s so important to have a regular check up with your doctor and maintain a healthy diet. This is especially important if there is a family history of heart complaints. High blood pressure is not necessarily hereditary but can follow in families.

The correct diet is important for controlling blood pressure. Research shows that those following a diet of fresh vegetables, with little or no meat, have far less chance of suffering from high blood pressure. People that have existed on a diet of fried food and red meat were highly susceptible to heart attacks, strokes and high blood pressure.

You would be very wise to check different diet plans for your high blood pressure situation and if necessary consult with your doctor who can put you in contact with a specialist dietitian. The American Heart Associations Committee have conducted massive research into the dietary needs of those with high blood pressure and have concluded that those on a suitable diet will most certainly increase their life expectancy.

A diet plan that has less salt intake is also a consideration. Americans use the greatest amount of salt in their diet than any other nation. Reducing your salt intake to less than six grams per day is highly recommended. The average American’s salt intake is ten grams per day.

Along with excess salt consumption the absence of certain minerals can contribute to high blood pressure. Any diet plan for high blood pressure should try to include minerals such as magnesium, calcium and potassium.

How the Best Life Diet Can Transform Your Life

The best life diet was created by Oprah Winfrey’s personal trainer and fitness expert Bob Greene. The Best Life Diet is comprised of 3 phases and centred on the idea of making small gradual changes to your lifestyle, transforming your old unhealthy eating and poor exercise habits into a new healthy, active lifestyle which will not only make you feel positive and full of energy, but also look fantastic as well.

Bob Greene gets you to look at all areas of your life and address the ones that need attention, for example you may have financial problems or your social life may not be so great. He advises you to make just one small change to that area each day and although very little difference can be seen at first just wait and see how dramatically your situation has changed in a year!

By addressing all areas of your life and not just focusing on losing weight you will be much more likely to achieve your goals and in the long term create a new positive, slimmer and more confident you.

One of the greatest weight loss issues that Bob Greene addresses is emotional eating. It’s easy to turn to food if you are anxious or depressed. It’s called comfort eating and provides a short term feeling of satisfaction and comfort. By resolving problem areas in your life you will feel happier and more content with yourself and as a result you will find the need to comfort eat a thing of the past as well as the fact that you are losing weight and looking great at the same time!

Why Traditional And Fad Diets Never Work

Have you tried to diet your way to looking FABULOUS, but fail to succeed? Done Atkins and the Zone and the Beach and Rice, and everything else, but still not seeing lasting results?

Well, that’s because there are two major flaws in virtually every diet on the market. These flaws are shared by weight loss pills, supplements and other methods of weight loss that are temporary helpers. What are these flaws?

1. They are unsustainable - In all of these diets and fads, you must “give something up” in order to lose weight. Eventually, you’re going to give in to all the cravings around you.

2. They are unnatural and unhealthy - That’s right, they’re unhealthy. It is unhealthy to be restricting your diet to completely exclude a particular energy type, and it’s unnatural to count calories. Our distant ancestors were quite fit and they didn’t even know what a calorie was.

Do you understand now? No? I’ll continue then.

The reason that most diets are unsustainable is that they do not address the root cause of being overweight: the person who is overweight. Now, in Western Society, we like to blame everyone else for our position in life, but in the end, everyone else doesn’t have to live OUR lives. We do. There can be any number of reasons that a person is overweight, but in the end, it’s because either A) they are too emotionally attached to food, or B) they do not do enough exercise to burn the calories and fat within their system, for whatever reason.

In the case of a person who is too emotionally attached to food (most of us who live in Western Society are like this at some point), the cure is simple, in theory. It is very hard to break an emotional attachment to the types of food available in abundance here. In my opinion, there are really only two ways to do it: break the physical desires, and then wrestle down the emotional, or reshape the emotional. Both of those methods take a lot of willpower for the first three days or so, but after that, you don’t need to even watch out until you are re-introduced to the over-abundance of food around us at all times.

To break the physical desire, you must fast, be it water, vegetable, liquids, or plant fasts, it doesn’t matter. Just remove the physical desire to eat. I’m not going to give you any medical advice here, but after you no longer have true physical “hunger”, you may break your fast, and start wrestling the emotional addiction.

To reshape what exactly it is you are emotionally attached to (slightly easier to accomplish, but takes longer to see results), you merely change your diet so that it is constant. Eat at particular meal times, particular amounts, and nothing in between meals. You eat the same particular meals at the same times, in the same amounts for at least a week, when you can slowly remove one of the smaller meals (like midnight snack, or half of breakfast). When you’ve finished removing the meal, you just continue like that for another couple of weeks, and you’ll find that your body will no longer crave more than those amounts.

In the case of the person who does not exercise enough, there are two possible solutions: reduce intake (won’t work in this case), or increase your physical output. Exercise does not have to be boring, you can do kung fu, play tennis, basketball, baseball, have sex, make-out, run from a killer, anything, as long as it either gets your heart-rate up, or (in the case of high-level qigong) re-balances your energy.

The Future of Dieting

Just like technology, pharmacology is constantly evolving. There is always the new hot drug on the market. Some save lives, some make life more livable, and some help you shed those unwanted pounds without living at the gym. Here is a look at some of the breakthrough pharmaceutical releases set to make their market debut over the next few years.

Pramlintide - Already available in the U.S. as a diabetes treatment, Pramlintide is being studied by Amylin Pharmaceuticals for its ability to produce a feeling of fullness when eating and reduce weight. A synthetic form of a satiety hormone, research has shown that when it’s injected into people’s bodies before a meal they eat less, even when given foods they crave. Amylin is also looking at how the drug works in combination with other hormones.

CP404 - CP404 is a calcium channel blocker that works as a nasal spray to block olfactory activity, or our sense of smell, and reduce food intake. Compellis Pharmaceuticals is developing the drug, which has only been tested on mice so far, says Compellis CEO Chris Adams. The company plans to begin human testing this year.

Orlistat (Xenical and alli) - A lipase inhibitor, Orlistat promotes weight loss by preventing the digestion and absorption of some fat from food. Unabsorbed fat is then excreted via the stool. It’s available by prescription as Xenical and, since June, as alli, the only FDA-approved over-the-counter weight loss product. Orlistat side effects may include gas with oily spotting and an urgent need to have a bowel movement

CLA - A new meta-analysis by University of Wisconsin at Madison researchers has shown that supplements containing conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), on the market for years, may help people shed fat. It’s believed that CLA, a fatty acid found in foods of animal origin such as beef, modifies enzymes responsible for storing and burning fat. Supplements are a good vehicle for CLA because it would be difficult for people to get enough of the fatty acid without loading up on saturated fat.

PP - Researchers at the Imperial College, London, are looking at how gut hormones–pancreatic polypeptide (PP) in particular–affect appetite control. The hormones are released when a person eats, acting as neurotransmitters that tell the brain to stop eating. Though it’s being developed in the form of an injection, it’s possible in the future that it could be produced as a patch or gum. Researchers hope to start phase one trials early next year and get the drug on the market in three to five years.

Y2R blocker - Georgetown University Medical Center researchers have been able to use nontoxic chemical injections to add and remove fat from lab mice. To add fat, researchers injected the neurotransmitter NPY into the mice. It’s believed that NPY is activated during stress, causing apple-shaped obesity and metabolic syndrome. But administration of the receptor Y2R into the mice’s abdominal fat prevented both results, melting the fat. Researchers hope that blocking Y2R might work the same way in humans.

Rimonabant (Acomplia) - Approved for use in the European Union as an obesity treatment, rimonabant selectively blocks the CB1 receptors of the endocannabinoid system. This system of receptors in the brain and body helps regulate food intake and how the body uses and stores fats and sugars. In clinical trials, rimonabant has been shown to reduce body weight, with side effects such as nausea and anxiety. Sanofi-aventis withdrew its FDA new drug application for rimonabant last month but is working toward resubmitting.

Suppressing Rip140 - Research has shown that suppression of receptor-interacting protein 140 (Rip140), a nuclear hormone co-repressor that regulates fat accumulation, can accelerate fat burning in animals and fat cells. Initially the subject of experiments at Imperial College in London, RXi Pharmaceuticals is developing the approach as a potential obesity or type-2 diabetes treatment.

Cetilistat - Under development by Alizyme, Cetilistat is a gastrointestinal lipase inhibitor that blocks fat digestion and absorption, causing weight loss. Clinical trials have shown that the drug has fewer side effects than Xenical, according to Alizyme. Cetilistat is currently being prepared for phase-three clinical development.

Meridia - An oral prescription medication, Meridia works by affecting the appetite control center in the brain. Most people who lose weight on the drug, in combination with diet and exercise, do so in the first six months of treatment, according to its maker, Abbott Laboratories. Common side effects include headache, dry mouth, constipation and insomnia.

So, have you scoped out the ones that sound like the next big wonder drug? Well don’t get too excited, these need a little more time before they are readily available to the public but keep your eyes peeled for them over the next few years. And remember that being healthy is more than just a weight game. Be active, be fit, be healthy, and you will look good naked.

Diets for Fast Weight Loss and Low Fat

To some degree, I have been involved and infatuated with diets for fast weight loss and low fat for many years. Diets come and go — The Rice Diet, The Fruit Diet, The Low Carb Diet, The High Carb Diet, The High Fat Diet, The Low Fat Diet, The Fiber Diet, the list goes on forever.

What each and every diet has in common is a controlled caloric intake. One thing we know for sure, when calories are reduced, the body calls upon other sources for fuel, one of them being stored body fat. So, unlike others who say, “Diets do not work,” I disagree and say, “All diets do work!”

The problem is this — they are either too difficult to maintain for long periods of time, or they do not supply enough calories, so a discouraged dieter usually throws in the towel and quits.

Years ago, scientists discovered a special phenomenon that occurs with food intake called thermogenesis. Thermogenesis is just a fancy word for the production of heat.

Foods are really forms of energy. When food is eaten, the body breaks down the fuel from the foods to obtain this energy in order to maintain life and to do work. The fate of this energy is threefold. First, energy can be used up by the body. Second, it can be stored as muscle glycogen to be used at a later date, or it can be stored as body fat. And the third fate of energy derived from food is that it can be “wasted as heat.”

Our bodies are always producing heat, much like a coal furnace. When foods are consumed, the body temperature rises and some of the calories from the foods we eat are simply burned off as heat, leaving less net calories available for the body, the muscle cells and fat cells. Some foods exert a strong thermic effect upon the body, while others do not. Most importantly however, protein food sources exert the greatest thermic effect upon the body.

Roughly 20% of the calories derived from protein foods are not available to be used by the body because they are burned off as body heat. Of course, dieters adopted this fact, and protein became the dieters choice food. People ate a lot of protein hoping it would have a thermogenic “overdrive” effect. As with any diet that is lower in calories, the approach worked to some degree, mainly due to a total lower caloric intake.

Over time, as dieters failed in their quest for a lean body, psychologists postulated the theory that people over-eat or under-eat due to their emotional state. Some studies showed a correlation between depression and overheating. Psychologists reasoned a person could only free themselves from overeating with intensive therapy.

The Idea Of The Diet For Detox

A large amount of the famous people is speaking about the great things that are associated with using the detox diet and are getting the public interested in this diet plan. Carol Volderman and Kim Wilde are some of the ones that are making it more popular and have taken the light off other types of diets.

One of the things that this diet for detox will give you is giving you the ability to loose weight in about ten days and getting better skin. You will also not have the bloating and the fat deposits like before. These are a few things that you will have as one of the many benefits to using this detox diet like the stars do.

Those that believe in the diet in a strong way will tell you that the large amount of the toxins in the body are taken in every single day. Times like these are the ones that are most important for us to consider the use of this diet for becoming healthier. The toxins will gather together in the body and cause all sorts of problems with the health. This can include tiredness, bloating, a weak immune system, and soreness all over. While using the detox diet plan, the user will have a great way to get rid of those toxins from their body.

You are also asked to start eating more fruits and vegetables in your daily diet. Raw vegetables are the best. Meat, dairy, and other items are forbidden in the detox stages. You will also need to refrain from taking in alcohol, cigarettes, and food that you know to be processed. You are encouraged to use fruits and vegetables that are organic in nature. You will also find that adding natural herbal remedies to the mix will improve the effects. A relaxation technique such as, massage, acupuncture, or acupressure will help to get you through it.

Why are these diets becoming so popular? The health care professionals are saying that there is no evidence to support the claims of the detox diets or that they can help you get rid of toxins in the body. Each person has their own system for getting rid of waste products in the body. These organs are known as the kidneys and bowels and work each day to eliminate the waste products from the body. The professionals that are involved with the detox plans also suggest that the routine not be done for long periods of time and only for a few days at a time. It is important for you to make sure that you add calcium to your diet because of the lack of dairy products while on the plan. You would not want to take the chance on getting osteoporosis or bad teeth from it.

You will surely loose a few pounds when you are on this diet. You will be loosing weight because of the fact that the majority of food is not allowed. You should not ever get your body used to a detox diet. You can use this particular diet each month for about three or four days at a time.

Can You Benefit From Green Tea Dieting?

As an avid drinker of green tea I decided to find out if there are any benefits of green tea dieting. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCg)is a catechin found in green tea, and is thought to be the key ingredient in green tea, which offers green tea drinkers abundant health benefits including weight loss.

One cup of green tea supplies 20-35 milligrams of EGCG.It is thought that EGCG fights fat effectively by increasing the rate of energy expenditure and fat burning through a process of thermogenesis.

There have been many studies conducted on the link between the EGCg found in green tea to weight loss in recent years. One widely cited study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (Vol.70,No.6,1999) set out to measure if green tea consumption could increase 24-hour energy expenditure and fat oxidation in humans. It concluded that “green tea has thermogenic properties and promotes fat oxidation beyond that explained by its caffeine content per se. The green tea extract may play a role in the control of body composition via sympathetic activation of thermogenesis, fat oxidation, or both.”

Caffeine is thought to assist in weight loss, and is often a major component in dietary supplements, it is also a component of green tea. There is about 30mg of caffeine per 8 ounce (240mls)cup.Does the caffeine in green tea help you lose weight? The Mayo Clinic summarises the effects of caffeine and weight loss in an article published on its website. It states: “Caffeine may act as an appetite suppressant. However, while studies have shown that some people eat less after consuming caffeine, this effect is brief — not long enough to lead to significant weight loss.

Caffeine may increase your body’s ability to burn calories. Caffeine is thought to stimulate thermogenesis — one way your body generates heat and energy from digesting food. However, caffeine’s role in thermogenesis probably isn’t enough to result in significant weight loss.

Caffeine acts as a diuretic, which means it causes an increase in the amount of urine you excrete. This water loss may temporarily decrease your body weight.”

Together EGCg and caffeine are said to have a substantial weight loss effect. In a study published in ‘in vivo’, vol.18, 2004 scientists studied the anti-obesity effects of catechins, caffeine and theanine, in mice. They concluded that the “combination of caffeine and catechins was the most effective among the green tea components in the suppression of body weight gain and fatty accumulation.”

Weight Watchers Diet

The famous weight watchers diet which has been around for many years and which millions throughout the world have found great success with, features the weight watchers point system. Points are attributed to foods based on the amount of fat, fibre and calories that food has per every gram. On this premise you are able to eat what you want, with nothing being off limits, providing of course that you stay within the daily point limit assigned to you.

The weight watchers plan is one of the most successful the world over and has stuck around where the majority of other diets have long since failed. While the points system is one of the main reasons, the other is the immense support that attending weight watchers meetings give the person. All members of weight watchers are encouraged to take an active part in the meetings and discussions, along with this weight watchers gives advice, you can join in forums online and take advantage of the many tools they have and also follow their diet plans in books and even buy weight watchers brand foods.

The actual amount of points which you are able to have for the day will depend of factors such as your body weight when joining and the amount of weight which you are trying to lose. The amount of weight which is lost is done slowly with the focus being on a long term plan for a healthier lifestyle which leads to gradual weight loss and then sticking with the new regime to hold the weight off.

The weight watchers plan is without a doubt one of the best ways to diet and to follow and stick to a diet, the reason being that the diet not only focuses on the weight that is to be lost right now, but also in keeping that weight off in the future. The diet plan shows you how to alter your lifestyle and way of eating to include nutritious and healthy foods while not making the mistake of totally denying some foods as with the majority of other diets.

The points system effectively teaches good portion control which is usually one of the biggest problems when it comes to dieting as very few people realise how many calories they are eating in the portions on their plate, which leads to overeating.

The weight watchers plan is without a doubt one of the easiest and most flexible of all diets to follow and this is backed up with the excellent support from other like minded people which are the main reasons why weight watchers has been around for so long and will continue to be there in the future.

Top Secrets to Fast and Easy Weight Loss

It is a known fact that our metabolism is the catalyst in our bodies that start off the process of converting the foods that we eat into the energy needed to function. We use this energy for everyday tasks and body functioning including breathing, any range of motion activities, thinking, and everything else you can think of that we do each second of the day. So it is safe to say that our bodies are constantly needing energy to function. However, if your body is taking in more calories than what is needed by the body your body then stores this extra caloric intake as fat. Furthermore, when more calories are needed by the body for functioning these extra calories are picked up and put to use.

So why are people over weight today? People are over weight simply because they are taking in more calories than what they need or they don’t properly plan their meals so that the body always has an efficient amount of calories to convert to energy. There are several ways that we can break out of the habits of taking in too many calories. There are even more ways that you can increase your metabolism so that your body stays in a caloric burning mode for fast and easy weight loss. Before you learn about those techniques and strategies lets go over some ways that we can all increase our metabolism and burn fat for fast and easy weight loss:

1. Try eating 6-8 small meals throughout the day instead of eating three big meals. When you eat big meals containing an enormous number of calories, your body is overwhelmed with calories that cannot be put to use and they are stored for future energy use.

2. Be more active and get involved. When your body is active, you burn calories. You want as much energy as possible being exerted throughout the day for significant weight loss. When you are burning more energy than what is being stored, you are simply losing weight.

3. Drink tea. Tea contains antioxidants that are known to burn fat. Instead of drinking those cups of coffee in the mornings, drink green tea.

4. Laugh and be happy. Did you know that when you laugh your abdomens are contracting and burning calories. Also, carrying around positive energy goes a long way with friendships, work and your overall wellness of life.

The Cabbage Soup Diet

The Cabbage Soup Diet is a temporary weight loss plan that claims that you can eat all the cabbage soup you want and lose weight. The diet is not met for permanent weight loss but rather rapid weight loss in seven days. After the seven days you are to resume your regular diet, according to the diet plan. Although the diet has been a success to many, you have to question whether or not this is a healthy diet. Your body needs more nutrient dense foods in the diet along with vitamins.

Many people have been successful using the diet for seven days with marvelous results. This is a good diet for people who have an event and need a few extra pounds shed. Such events can include weddings, trips, and reunions. This diet can also be good for those who do not have the extra funds to contribute to buying the extra weight loss snacks and products.

It is not recommended that cabbage soup be the only food consumed within that seven day period. This can cause malnourishment. It is important that large volumes of water be ingested throughout those seven days. It is also strongly recommended that your doctor be consulted before implementing any type of diet plan. Here is the seven day plan for the Cabbage Soup Diet:

Day 1: Cabbage soup, plus fruit (no bananas).

Day 2: Cabbage soup, plus vegetables.

Day 3: Cabbage soup, plus fruits and vegetables.

Day 4: Cabbage soup, plus bananas and milk.

Day 5: Cabbage soup, plus tomatoes and meat or fish.

Day 6: Cabbage soup, plus meat and vegetables.

Day 7: Cabbage soup, plus rice, fruit juice, and vegetables.

It should be known that the best way to lose weight is by eating healthy foods contained in the health food pyramid and exercising. The American Heart Association strongly recommends that any weight loss be done in a safe and healthy matter.
